It was once considered a mark of style and prestige to have one’s portrait taken in a prominent studio. The Viennese photographers Franz Xaver Setzer and Marie Karoline Tschiedel created more than 24,000 portraits of distinguished contemporaries over seven decades. Their images of artists, intellectuals, and members of the nobility are today valuable records of a bygone era and a key chapter in Vienna’s photographic and cultural history.
