Film soup and colour mordançage have the potential to work together to make psychedelic photographs with fascinating textures. We will spend the morning discussing film soup techniques, looking at work and deciding from a variety of pre-soaked film soup options to shoot. Participants will receive 2 sheets of large format colour film and are welcome to bring their own film (any format) to work with as well.
We will explore the neighbourhood with our large format camera, shooting our souped film. We will then develop the film with C-41 chemistry, using the bleach bypass method to retain silver in the film, which will allow it to react with the mordançage chemistry.
Our final task will be to soak our film in the mordançage chemistry and watch as the emulsion lifts, turning into bubbles and veils. Veil manipulation techniques will be discussed. Once the film is rinsed and dried, the emulsion will stick back on to the celluloid and the negative can be scanned or printed. Participants will leave the workshop with two fully-realised film soup/colour mordançage negatives.
Schedule:
-Intro: Explanation of film soup and mordançage processes. (1 hr)
-Photo walk: Walk around the area, each participant shoots two sheets of film. (1.5 hours)
-Lunch break (1 hr)
-Intro to C-41 Development: Explain steps and chemical reaction at each step and why we use the bleach bypass method. Develop film. (1 hour)
-Mordançage Experimentation: Soak film sheets in chemistry, experiment with veils. (1 hour)
-Dry film, clean up and discussion of the results. (30 min)
