When spending time in the Vosges, we came across many half-abandoned villages. The slow pull of the big city causes people to move away. Shops closed, shutters drawn, quiet streets. Places that were once loved, cared for, and full of life, now almost ghost towns.
There is something moving about this type of faded glory. Buildings that remain as silent evidence of lives once lived here, discarded by people in motion. Gardens grow over what was left behind.
Not everything that fades takes centuries. Some of it is happening on our doorstep, within a single lifetime. In the spaces people leave behind, a different kind of beauty quietly begins.
